Norway is best known for its cross-country skiing, which is superb almost everywhere. There is an endless network of marked trails (skil?yper) over rolling hills, through forests, over frozen lakes and in the mountains. Numerous small ski centres offer inexpensive ski rental and tuition, and with one or two ski lifts and a cafeteria they are perfect for an occasional downhill day or practising cross-country techniques. All the downhill resorts also have extensive trail networks. Even with only a little experience you can easily ski independently on well-marked trails using local trail maps.
If you have not tried cross-country skiing before it is quite easy to learn and does not need to be any more energetic than walking. Gliding on lightweight skis through wonderful snow-covered scenery far from crowds and noise is a totally different experience from downhill skiing. Ski hire is inexpensive and a few hours tuition will get you started.
